Sightseeing in Miltenberg and Aschaffenburg
Miltenberg (distance to hotel: ca 25 km) has a small but worthwhile exploring historical old center with cozy corners and crooked cobblestone streets lined by magnificent buildings. To this day, the former market square Schnatterloch (‘Gabbling Hole’) shows the former grandeur of this town.
High-rising historical half-timbered houses seam this square leading to the residential Schwarzviertel (‘Black Quarter’) leaning between the river Main and the Greinberg mountain as if looking for shelter.
It is possible to take a tour of the privately owned brewery Faust, or simply sample its beers together with freshly prepared local specialties at the oldest (!) guest house in Germany, the Riesen (‘the Giant’) - and, yes, the historical house dating back to the 12th century is impressively large!
The historical museum of the City of Miltenberg and the Mildenburg Castle are also definitely worth a visit.
Aschaffenburg (distance to hotel: 15 km): Inspired by the excavations in the historical ruins of Pompeji (Italy), King Ludwig I. ordered the architect Friedrich von Gärtner to design and erect a reproduction of a Roman Villa from 1840-1848. Thanks to its parks, museums and Castles, the King fondly called Aschaffenburg ‘the Bavarian Nice’.
On the banks of the river Main, Johannisburg Castle majestically overlooks the river valley.
All year round Aschaffenburg offers interesting cultural highlights such as festivals, theater plays, political cabaret, art exhibitions, etc.
The hilly forest areas Odenwald and Spessart open additional opportunities for various activities only a stone’s throw away: take wonderful hikes with breathtaking sites through the terraced vineyards along the Red Wine Hiking Trail (Rotweinwanderweg); hop on the bicycle and cycle easily along the river Main or – more ambitiously - through the lush forests all around; check your surefootedness and head for height in the climbing park Spessart or simply enjoy a boat cruise on the river Main…
Shoppers’ paradise can be found in the garment outlet centers in close-by Leidersbach, a.k.a. the ‘jacket canyon’. A short bus trip along the Main river takes you to Wertheim Village, a designer outlet center miniature village housing some 100 renowned brands and makes.

This is all but a dry affair! The hikes are a lovely experience any time of the year from budding in May, grape blossom in June, grape harvest in fall to crystal-clear and frosty winter days.
